How UK prize competitions work

The basic model

A prize competition offers an item, cash amount or package to an entrant selected under the operator's published rules. The operator controls the entry process, payment, draw, winner contact and prize fulfilment. Competition Checker is separate: we compare public information and do not accept entries or take part in the draw.

Paid entries are usually sold at a stated price and may be limited by a maximum ticket allocation. Some competitions include a question or other qualifying step. Many operators also publish a free postal route. The exact legal structure and entry requirements belong to the operator, so its current terms are always the final source.

The numbers that change the comparison

A low ticket price can look attractive while still sitting inside a very large ticket pool. A higher-priced ticket can sometimes have a smaller maximum pool. Neither is automatically better: price and ticket cap need to be considered together.

When a trusted maximum ticket allocation is available, Competition Checker can express maximum-pool odds as one chance in that allocation for a single ticket. This is a comparison measure, not a prediction of the final number sold and not a promise that any ticket will win.

• Ticket price: the current trusted unit price, not an assumed bundle price.
• Maximum tickets: the competition-wide allocation, never a per-person purchase limit.
• Current entries or remaining stock: shown only where the source contract makes the meaning clear.
• Draw date: the stated date may move under the operator's sell-out or extension terms.

Prize value and alternatives

A direct cash prize is different from an item that includes some cash, and both are different from an explicit cash alternative. Competition Checker keeps those concepts separate. A vehicle described as including GBP 5,000 does not automatically have a GBP 5,000 cash alternative.

Voucher and store-credit prizes should be treated as vouchers, not cash, even when the title contains a pound amount. Where a reliable prize value is missing, an honest unknown value is more useful than a guessed figure.

Checks to make before entering

Read the live competition page and official terms immediately before entering. Confirm the price, closing or draw date, prize specification, any alternative prize, entry restrictions, free-entry instructions and what happens if the competition does not sell out.

Keep spending within a fixed amount you can comfortably afford. Buying more entries changes probability but never guarantees a result. If important information is unclear, pause and ask the operator before paying.
